Research Methods in Health Care-Suicide Rates Among Non-Serving Veterans

Suicidal rates remain high among non-serving veterans and have become a problem concern for veteran affairs. The suicide rate among veterans compared to non-veteran adults in the U.S in 2019 was 31.6 per 100,000 and 16.8 per 100,000, respectively (Veteran Affairs News, 2021). However, there is a lack of empirical evidence or attention to this problem. This is mostly attributed to the lack of a theoretical framework or model to guide related research.

The Health Belief Model (HBM) focuses on motivating healthy behaviors. This makes the HBM a suitable model that can guide research with the intent to address the suicide rates among non-serving veterans and attempt to change related behaviors. The central hypothesis of the HBM is that the decision of people taking action to prevent, screen for, or control an illness is based on their perceived susceptibility and severity of the illness, benefits, and barriers to action, the cues to action, and their perceived efficacy towards taking action.

The HBM clearly explains the three levels of influence that can influence the development of suicidal behaviors among non-serving veterans and them carrying through with suicidal ideations. Using the model, it is possible to empirically identify and define the intrapersonal factors that influence the development of suicidal behaviors among non-serving veterans, such as past experiences, self-concept, attitudes, and beliefs.

Proposed Causal Model Design

According to the HBM, a majority of non-serving veterans may not agree that they are at risk of suicidal behaviors or engaging in suicide (perceived susceptibility) or whether suicide is something serious to worry about (perceived severity). Free-to-access veteran support programs can manage suicidal behaviors (perceived barriers and benefits), while promotion and awareness campaigns on veteran suicides (cues to action) can improve the confidence of non-serving veterans (self-efficacy) to engage in available support programs.
